A computer virus which shut down Ealing Council’s services is estimated to have cost the authority more than 500,000. The virus which hit the council’s server on May 14 and threatened computers on and off for 12 days, came from a USB memory stick used in the Ruislip Road office. Immediate recovery costs totaled 202,000, for staff overtime, catering, travel, eliminating the virus and rebuilding computer systems. For some companies it may have been worth a few extra dollars for decent antivirus software.  In this day and age it’s crucial to have spyware removal and antivirus software.

E-mail spam and so-called phishing attacks are on the rise and social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have come under attack. The threat to personal information is frightening. A computer virus, or malware, is not unlike a germ or virus that makes you sick. Computer viruses spread and mutate from one computer to another, infecting entire networks. But like physical ailments, cyber security experts say there are steps we can take to protect ourselves. Some hackers have been known to accumulate funds in the million dollars like the most recent Gonzalez.  In the new case, the hackers used software known as malware and so-called injection strings to attack the computers and steal data, prosecutors said. They installed “sniffer” programs to capture data “on a real-time basis” as it moved through the computer networks and used instant messaging services to advise each other on how to navigate the systems, according to the indictment. They also programmed malware to evade detection by anti-virus software and erase files that might detect its presence, prosecutors said.

Why take such extreme precautions? The alert indicates that the sophistication, stealth, and sheer volume of malicious software being distributed these days is testing the limits of traditional anti-malware protections, such as antivirus software. According to the latest estimates by anti-virus maker Trend Micro, at least 253 million systems were infected with malware last year, the majority of which were the result of software lying in wait on hacked or malicious Web sites. At the rate that new malware specimens are being created – more than a million per month – Trend estimates that the comparable number PCs that will be infected with malware in 2009 will nearly double, to 491 million.

Do You Have Spyware on Your Computer?

Thursday

Deon Plessis asked:

Most people seem to be oblivious to the real threat that spyware and adware pose personal computers. If you think about it, it’s the perfect crime. Where else can you steal without being seen, heard or even detected? Getting access to thousands of people’s personal information is what drives so many hackers who create very clever spyware with the sole purpose of seeing your personal information.

The first and most obvious threat is identity theft. Dr. Phil recently dedicate and entire show to the identity theft and highlighted the extents of this billion dollar crime. If you stop and think about it, how much of your life is stored on your computer? Can someone “recreate” you from that info? Photos, social security number, name, date of birth…even your medical history.

It’s amazing how these guys can sniff out your whole life story from a single threat of evidence. What’s even more scary is how they can get hold of and use your credit card information. Obviously money is one of the biggest drivers and most spyware will target getting your credit card information.

With new payment gateways like PayPal to accommodate the growing online sales machine, the threat increased exponentially and PayPal has been targeted by thousands of hackers and scammers, trying to gain access to personal information.

Unfortunately you can never protect yourself 100% just like you cannot protect yourself 100% against crime in the real world. But, you need to do all you can. Hackers are far more likely to go after easy targets and with millions of internet users surfing the web unprotected, there are plenty of soft targets.
So, how do you know if you have spyware on your computer? Well, most people probably won’t know. Unless you are an experienced internet user with a bit of know-how, you probably won’t even know that there are spyware on your computer.

Here are 5 of the most common telltale signs that your computer might be infected.

1. Does your internet browser start up with a different home page than your normal one?

2. Do you see an increase in advertising pop-ups?

3. Does your computer seem much slower or crash more than before?

4. Do you have unknown icons on your desktop?

5. Do you have “new” items on your web browser’s toolbar?

Although there are some more sophisticated spyware that won’t show any of these signs, by checking these 5 you will at least become aware of the problem. It’s vitally important that you remove all the adware and spyware that might be lurking on your computer.

The best way to get rid of spyware is to download a spyware remover, scan your computer and let it remove the spyware automatically. Trying to do it manually is definitely not recommended unless you have a very good programming knowledge. On my site, The Adware & Spyware Geek, I have several reviews of some of the best adware and spyware and most of them offer a free download which would allow you to scan your computer and find these threats.

Malware represents programming or other files that are designed to harm computer, and it includes viruses, worms, trojans, backdoor, hijackers, and spyware among others. Adware represents a program that generates pop-ups and displays advertisements on your computer. Backdoor represents a program which allows a remote attacker to perform operations and execute tasks on a user’s computer without the user’s permission. A backdoor program is mostly used to attack other computers as well as steal copyrighted media files and software, or just to hack a computer. Dialer represents a program which dials a premium rate number that features high “per minute charges” and is mostly used to access pornographic content. Hijackers consist of programs that hijack functions on your computer, meaning they can redirect your browser’s homepage to another homepage controlled by the hijacker. Hijacker programs can make you contact other malware, redirect your searches to an unwanted search engine, but it can even replace the search results for popular search engines like Google or Bing. Spyware is a program that monitors your activity on a computer, gather personal or other information, and send it to a remote computer without your awareness. Trojan is a program that doesn’t look dangerous or harmful, but in fact it causes malicious activity on your computer and it can provide backdoors to your machine. Virus is a program that can multiply on your computer by infecting other programs and software in the system and has various malicious effects like deleting files on your hard-drive, corrupt files, steal data, and make it nonfunctional. Worm is a program that can spread to other computers on its own via mass-mailing to e-mail addresses found on your machine, or using your Internet connection to infect other computers via security holes.

According to security researchers, a malicious virus that has crept into thousands of computers could be responsible for the loss of around $350,000 from the bank account of Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47.  The Clampi virus could have stolen between $325,000 and $350,000 from the bank account of the school which had used the account to pay daily expenses.  Similar computer intrusions have occurred across the country and therefore all FBI offices are working collectively. It is said that the Clampi virus seizes usernames and passwords to transfer money from bank accounts of mid size companies. American companies have lost millions to the virus and it is making public schools its new victim.

These kinds of things are happening all over the world, it’s very important to have a spyware removal and antivirus software on guard at all times. Make sure you understand the software and it works for your needs, there’s no reason to take a chance with this kind of information online.

Internet Dangers Continue To Happen

Monday

Rosemarie Grabowski asked:

New web pages are being infected at a rate of one every five seconds making staying safe on the Internet more of a hassle than ever before.

The first quarter of 2008 Security Report A Threat . . .

From Sophos Labs is enough to make you never want to go on the Internet again. The Internet dangers are ever growing and the report reveals cyber criminals aren’t slowing down making keeping your computer safe on the Internet harder than ever.

Look at the events and trends that emerged during the first quarter of 2008 report with the goal to help users and businesses keep up with today’s Internet threats in order to better defend against an attack.

The Internet

Alarming was the revelation that the web now hosts an unprecedented number of . . .

Internet threats, with Sophos discovering a new infected web page every five seconds. This is an average of more than 15,000 every day. This compares to their 2007 report when Sophos Labs reported they discovered a new infected web page every 14 seconds. They report that 79 percent of these pages are legitimate sites.

Even Scarier is the infected sites are not just “Mom and Pop” sites.

Email 95% are spam

The good news:

The Sophos report stated that only one in 2500 emails was found to be carrying malware. That’s 40 percent less than in 2007.

The bad news: Cyber criminals, instead of incorporating malware into the email in the form of an attachment, are now using unsolicited email to provide links to compromised web sites.

Sophos points out that there is still a common belief that unsolicited email, or spam, is not a threat. With a large portion of unsolicited or spam email linking to infected websites, they say, individuals and small business would be wise to address this growing computer problem before becoming a victim.

Many of these sites are well established including well-known spyware companies Trend Micro and Symantec. So, just going to what you might consider to be safe websites isn’t as safe as you might think.
